Sheffield Highstreet

As a student moving to the UK from abroad, why not consider a look at scenic Sheffield? The Guardian declared this quirky and beautiful city as the best place for students to live in 2014, and in 2013 Sheffield was crowned as the happiest city in the UK. Although one of the smaller Northern cities, it is definitely not one that should be overlooked.

Having two highly ranked universities in the same city isn’t common, but Sheffield is home to the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam, both of which are ranked within the top 70 universities in the UK. The result of having two outstanding universities in one small city means more than 50,000 students studying in a welcoming, familiar and tight-knit student community. What more could you ask for?

When it comes to the nightlife of Sheffield there are no disadvantages. There is a student night on every day of the week, even on a Sunday, with a huge variety of music that suits a variety of tastes. The best part of the Sheffield nightlife is how reasonably priced it all is; with Walkabout and Varsity a favourite among budget-conscious students. Entry to clubs, drinks and the taxi home will only make a modest dent in your student loan!

Sheffield is also home to a whole host of music venues – some large, some tiny – so whether you like your mainstream, stadium artists or lesser-known talent, there’s undoubtedly something for you. Venues like The Leadmill are a great option if you want to discover new, unsigned talent, as every week it plays host to the best of up-and-coming artists. Alternatively, if you’re more of a Beyoncé and Jay-Z kind of fan, keep an eye out for the big name artists playing at Sheffield Motorpoint arena.

Not only will your student loan be safe thanks to reasonably-priced nightlife, but getting around the city is even cheaper. Both the tram service and the bus service are easily accessible all over Sheffield and students are eligible for a flat rate fare of only 80p with a valid NUS card. This even includes services to Meadowhall shopping centre where you can spend all the money you saved on travel!

If you remember Jessica Ennis, the famous Olympian of 2012, then you will know how important sport is to the folks of Sheffield. With an Olympic-sized swimming pool, the world’s deepest diving pool, rugby league, ice hockey, and basketball teams, and countless large parks, you will not be short of a sport to take part it!

And let’s not forget the intense football rivalry that separates the city of Sheffield, with the two local football teams, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United.

Being one of the safest cities in the UK, with a massive ethnic diversity, Sheffield is the perfect place for international students looking for a truly unique student experience.
