If you want to experience a unique city lifestyle, with an unusually laid-back atmosphere and still attend a great University, then look no further than the city of Exeter. Situated in the South-West of England in the county of Devon, the city is a stone’s throw from the beach, a short ride to the moors and is surrounded by a huge amount of natural beauty. Famous for its farms, culture, friendly characters and fine food, Exeter really is city life with a twist.

Credited as one the top ten universities in the country, Exeter University certainly is the cream of the crop and is definitely one to consider if you have your sights set on graduating with a first class degree. With alumni students including the likes of J.K Rowling, Will Young, Caroline Lewis and Rhod Gilbert; the university has attracted its fair share of successful, famous faces. After a £300m re-development investment in 2009, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the newly refurbished Streatham campus. The University was then invited to join the prestigious Russell Group of leading research Universities and also boasts the achievement of receiving The Sunday Times University of the year.

The West Country has a renowned Rugby Union strong-hold and Exeter definitely supports this notion. The local rugby team, the Exeter Chiefs, currently play in the Aviva premiership, the top level of domestic Rugby Union in England. Chiefs are a rugby team on the rise, having won the Anglo-Welsh Cup earlier this year and progressing well in the premiership. If rugby isn’t your thing then get yourself down to St. James’ Park where you can see League Two side, Exeter City play. Exeter also has a number of water sports including the famous rowing club, if that’s more your thing.

Located in the heart of Exeter, with the iconic Cathedral as its backdrop, you could say Princesshay Shopping Centre almost has its own microclimate of shoppers. With cafes, bistro’s, brasseries, coffee shops and traditional pubs in abundance, you will never be short of places to stop and take in the atmosphere, while grabbing a drink or bite to eat. Whether you’re looking for large high street names, or quirky independent shops, Exeter is a refuge for the avid shopaholic and will certainly burn a hole in your pocket – or student bank balance. Roll on loan day!

Life’s a beach

Follow the Exeter canal towards the famous ‘double locks’ where you will see anything from natural wildlife and people canoeing, to groups of cyclists riding along the well-recognised cycle route. Eventually you will come to the picture perfect village of Starcross, situated on the west shore of the Exe Estuary Nature Reserve. From here you can either dine in a choice of two pubs overlooking the tiny, picturesque harbour or catch the ferry across to the golden sands of Exmouth. Exeter is a great city for those who love the great outdoors.

Whether it is the narrowest street in the UK – Parliament Street, or the widest birth cathedral in the UK – Exeter Cathedral, Exeter is a haven for the enthusiastic culture vulture. The City has also been voted the fourth safest place to live in the UK, boasting great transport links via bus train and an international airport – it’s the perfect place for any student. Finally, Gandy Street, a cobbled street full of independent bars, cafe’s and shops, is a must-see if you’re a harry Potter fan. The inspiration for the famous Diagon Alley, it’s essential for any J.K. Rowling fanatic.

Sunbathing on some of Devon’s golden sands, climbing the famous haytor rock, dining in restaurants overlooking the quay or simply enjoying a long coastal walk; Devon really does offer the ultimate alternative student life.
